Tools are for Girls

I’ve been building a collection of crafty gadgets and gizmos for a while now. There are few things more exciting than getting a new toy that will help you create. I’ll tell you what; power tools have been appropriately named. There is an undoubted feeling of mastery and potential with a drill or saw in hand. New projects and works of art are suddenly within reach.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s talk basics. Finding the right instrument to fit your purpose can be overwhelming. But with a little time and research, things make a bit more sense. I’ve put together a quick list to help you as you make your way in the hardware world. In the weeks to come, I’ll show you a few projects you can do with each item.

To get started, find the right tool bag. The Carhartt Legacy Line has several different options available to fit your needs. I have a 14″ bag and a tool roll. The roll is great for storing screwdrivers and, in my case, a lot of chisels. They are constructed out of tough, water repellant fabric.

I can’t say enough good things about the Dremel. It’s incredibly simple and full of possibilities. For example, you can: saw, carve wood, etch glass, grind metal, sand surfaces, polish almost anything, sharpen blades, and even trim your pets’ nails. There are different levels of versatility with each rotary body. I picked one with high functionality to have more options and available attachments. The accessories are where it gets fun. Think of a few projects you’d like to do first and buy the attachments necessary for those tasks. For example, the edge you’ll need to cut glass as compared to wood is very different.

Now it comes to finding the right drill. This is something I researched for a long time. In the end I went with a higher end product in a set pack. One is an impact driver and one is a hammer drill. Impact drivers are more compact, powerful, fast, and typically expensive. It works by applying force in a smooth, counter-clockwise motion. A hammer drill moves with a hammer-like forward thrust. It’s useful with brittle materials like brick or concrete. As with the Dremel, the accessories are where it gets fun. Think of the projects you want to do and find the attachments needed for those tasks. Kits with many options can be cost effective and useful. You might also want to pick up some woodworking clamps to secure surfaces while you’re at it.

I use wires in my crafting a lot. When you’re working with a metal that isn’t very malleable, it can be tough on your hands. That’s where a wire bender comes into play. Practice bending scraps before immediately using it on expensive materials like copper. Take a look at this wire bending project.

Jigsaws are the perfect tool for cutting wood, metal, and plastics in a free form line. This isn’t necessarily a saw for hefty materials. Keep things light and simple and you’ll have the ability to make whimsical cuts and creations. Blade selection depends on what substrate you’re sawing through. This is another time when you’ll need woodworking clamps.

Stay tuned in the weeks ahead. We’ll get to know these tools on a much better level with new crafts.
