Caitlin Kerr of The Foxglove Studios
After leaving the music industry to find a creative challenge, Caitlin Kerr founded The Foxglove Studios. She started small, maintaining part time jobs and freelancing while building her skills and learning the craft. Each gradual step made it a more manageable task to jump into a whole new career. With time her clientele grew and running the studio became a fulltime job. Starting over can seem daunting and even downright impossible, but Caitlin put aside those fears created her own dream job.
Another important part of starting a new career path is to remember your roots. The years you spent at your old job weren’t pointless. You put in time an effort that helped make you the person you are today. Music plays a large role in Caitlin’s job. She listens to songs, bands, and composers reminiscent of the mood she’s aiming to capture in her creations.
Floral Arrangement Tips from Caitlin of The Foxglove Studios:
1. Use chicken wire, floral tape, or both to create a base. Avoid the Styrofoam filled with toxic chemicals.
2. Use it all. The greens of a flower can also be utilized. Don’t strip off the leaves, they create texture and fill out the arrangement.
3. When arranging, start with the base of greens and foliage. Then add focal flowers and whimsical flowers (the whispy, airy, smaller, and more wild types of flowers like scabiosa and ranunculus).
4. Allow the focal flowers to stand taller. It creates a more interesting arrangement.
5. Make sure to cut the stems of your arrangements and change the water everyday.
Laura Brown of Minnesota Center for Book Arts
In places like Twin Cities, where the winters are often filled with negative temperatures, it’s the perfect time to cozy up in the studio and create. That’s Laura Brown’s mentality. She’s been a part of the Artist Co-op at Minnesota Center for Book Arts since 2011. It’s a wonderland of printmaking and bookbinding. What drew Laura in was the community aspect of the craft. The machinery and equipment is large, expensive, and meant to be shared. In the photos above you can watch Laura’s process as she prints a calendar for the new year. How cool is that? Can you see how she sets the template and runs an inked up roller across it? You can purchase one of these handmade beauties here. There is so much personality in printmaking. It opens up a world of surprises and problem solving. The beautiful letters, rich inks, and the hand-touched nature of each impression (that’s what you call an individual print). Meet Josey Butler. She grew up on a rural Missouri cattle farm and now lives and works in Texas, training horses and competing in rodeos. Josey is a fireball if I’ve ever met one. So much skill and determination flow from her as she steps into the arena. She’s confident and bold. Her horses knows who’s boss. She’s authoritative and filled with compassion and understanding at the same time. The relationship with a horse and his master is so complex and unlike anything else. When I asked Josey to explain that connection to me, I was blown away by her response.
“Being the weird horse girl growing up has taken me places nationally a lot of people will never see. It’s extremely hard work, people think you just ride horses all day, and there is so much more too it than that. You have to be a part time vet and part time therapist to a 1200 lb animal who can’t just tell you what’s wrong. You have to be a carpenter, plumber, electrician, and mechanic because things don’t always malfunction during business hours, and running a horse training facility relies on all those things daily. You’re also an accountant and secretary because the government still wants taxes, and there is an amazing amount of paperwork involved in both billing and accounts payable when your entering events and such. On the other hand when you’re recieving checks, or an award for a job well done for a client, or even just sitting on a great horse at the end of the day, watching the sunset– it’s unbelievably satisfying. Most people who train in the horse industry never end up on the cover of Forbes but I don’t think I would be near as happy working 9-5 in a suit.”
A life and career driven by passion and a solid work ethic is worth the sweat. Find what drives you and make it happen. Be grateful for the little things you do day-to-day that remind you why you’ve chosen the path you’re on. Find joy in the sunsets.

Hoyt Arboretum in Portland
Hoyt Arboretum in Portland is one of the most breathtaking expanses I’ve ever seen. It stretches across 12 ridge top miles and is home to over 1,000 species. (some endangered ones too) Hoyt Arboretum Friends is a membership-based nonprofit organization that helps maintain this Oregon jewel. These lovely ladies help care for the grounds. They get to work outside everyday. Even when it’s cold or rainy, they’re ready with their Carhartt gear.

Camille, Carhartt stylist
One of the things I love most about Carhartt is that they don’t use models in their photos. The people you see doing cool jobs actually do those jobs in real life. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather see real people. It’s authentic. It reminds me how important it is to chase after your dream jobs and your passions. If you’ve always wanted to be a welder or longed to own your own bakery or start a shoe making company, you can be reassured by those who have set out on their own ventures before you. This is Camille. On Carhartt shoots, she’s in charge of all the clothes. In the photos above Camille is setting our crew up with the proper gear as they do some construction work on The Bridge of the Gods in Oregon. Sure beats a desk job– all that fresh air and Carhartt!

DIY: Infinity Leaf Scarf
The photos above were taken on a little river I discovered in my wanderings around Albany, New York. It was so relaxing to sit on the bank of the riverbed and listen to the water swirl by, soaking up as much fall as possible. I love taking hints from my surroundings and adding them into my outfits. This secluded section of peacefulness was filled with inspiration. That’s when I came up with the idea of a scarf made of leaves. It’s not too hard to do, all you need is some spare fabric and thread. The Carhartt Women’s Artisan Jacket has been one of my favorites this season, and it goes perfectly with my new scarf.
