Two James in Corktown, Detroit’s oldest neighborhood, was the first licensed distillery to open in the Motor City since the prohibition. Not only are their spirits distilled and bottled locally, there is an impeccably designed bar-in-the-round on site. It’s a great place to sit back, enjoy a drink, take a peak behind the scenes, and soak up good vibes.

We got the inside scoop from Monica Gyroke, who is a bartender at Two James, as we followed her around the facilities. They have 3 different spirits on the menu: 28 Island Vodka, Old Cockney Gin and Grass Widow Bourbon. Each one is made from locally sourced agricultural products to further support the revitalization of the community.

If you’re feeling your inner mixologist is ready to shine this New Year’s, our friends at Two James have the perfect cocktail for you to try.

The Corktown Flip:
Grab a few drink shakers.
Pour 2 oz. of your favorite stout into one of the shakers.
Swirl the stout in the shaker vigorously to flatten and release carbonation.
Crack an egg into the shaker with the stout.
Pour ¼ of 2:1 homemade simple syrup into the shaker.
Add 2 oz. of Two James Grass Widow.
Add 2 strong dashes of Black Walnut Bitters.
Dry shake the ingredients.
Add ice and re-shake.
Double strain the flip into the cup.
Add another touch of Black Walnut Bitters.
Garnish with a candied walnut.
Enjoy!

Here’s to You, 2013!

Crafted in Carhartt New Years

Crafted in Carhartt New Years

It’s that time of year again where we all get nostalgic as our thoughts pour over the year we’ve left behind. So often we look back wishing we could have been better, done better, or looked better. Maybe this year, we can take a more positive glance back on the past 365 days. Posted above are some of my favorite moments of 2013. I am so grateful for all of the tremendous Carhartt spirited women I’ve been able to meet and photograph. Each one of you has left an impression that propels me to work harder, see more, and appreciate what I can bring to the world. The chance to get to share those stories with you all makes my job feel like it isn’t a job at all. Thank you to the real women who work hard, defy the odds against them, and tackle the day excited to see what they can accomplish. Pat yourself on the back! You deserve a celebration over the close of year and the start of another.
