DIY Bacon Hearts

If you’re scrambling for something to make for Valentine’s Day, treat yourself or someone you love to these simple and delicious bacon hearts.

All you really need is bacon, a knife, a pan and an oven. For easier clean-up, use parchment paper. For extra fancy hearts, throw in some chocolate.

  • Get some bacon.
  • Cut it in half.
  • On a baking sheet, shape one half of the heart and then the other, letting the two sides overlap just a bit.
  • Bake at 400 for 15-20 minutes depending on your oven and the thickness of the bacon.
  • Drain off the grease and serve immediately, on their own or as a special breakfast side.

OR if you want to be extra decadent…

  • Drain off the grease and let the hearts cool on a wire rack.
  • Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips in a microwaveable bowl. Start on half power, stirring often so it doesn’t get funky or burn.
  • Drizzle the chocolate over the hearts or just dunk them right in there.
  • Let them cool and enjoy!

Some tips…
Floppy bacon is best. Thick-cut bacon is delicious, but doesn’t shape as well.
Your baking sheet should have sides, unless you want a fire-y mess.
If you choose to cover your bacon in chocolate, it works best if you make your hearts nice and crispy.
Don’t worry if the halves of your heart come apart while dipping. You can stick them back together with melted chocolate.
Watch out for cute dogs underfoot. Your kitchen will smell amazing!

DIY Copper Heart Garland

This Valentine’s Day garland is one of the simplest crafts I’ve ever done. I love a good decoration that fills up a big space in a little amount of time. All you need is one of these handy heart punchers. It should be easy to find at your local craft store. I mixed copper sheets with some hand-painted card stock, punched a bunch of hearts out, and interlocked them with ease. Then set I up a little area of the room to create a quick and easy backdrop.

DIY Hammered Copper Notes

Looking for a sweet way to let a loved one know how you feel about them? Why not express yourself in a true crafty gal’s way–through hammered copper? You’ll need a picture frame, copper sheets, scissors, die punch letters, steel bench block, and a mallet.

  • First, cut out a piece of copper to fit into your picture frame.
  • Then carefully punch each letter into the copper. (You can use a piece of masking tape as a guide to maintain straight lines of text if you wish.)
  • Frame it and you’re done!

Your love note could say anything really. Just think of all the possibilities. Transcribe your wedding vows or an inside joke. If you have a crafty Valentine that you’d like to share, email craftedincarhartt(at)carhartt.com.

Valentine’s Day can be a very divisive topic. You love it or you hate it. It does feel like a very commercial holiday that pointlessly makes us buy tons of things covered in little pink and red hearts and end the night with a self-indulgent candy binge. I’ve never been a fan of store bought cards or heart-shaped chocolate boxes. But boy do I love a good old fashioned handcrafted sentiment. That’s why these wire words are the perfect craft for this time of year. Give them as a gift or simply use them in your own home as decoration. This year, make something from the heart to remind those you hold dear how much they mean to you. Go ahead, state the obvious.

I made another trip to the hardware store to get inspiration this week, and it hit me– a candelabra made out of pipes! It’s different, sturdy, and easy to do. This is a great idea for a Valentine’s gift. Make a night out of it; pizza and beer by very rustic candlelight. Use some great textures to to set the table. Faux fur and wool blankets, a nice slab of wood for a flat surface, bamboo plates, his favorite beer, and a nice pizza pie are the perfect set up for a cozy night in. Forget the cards covered in pink hearts and get to the hardware store! This will be a piece you can keep around forever. It’s a fun conversation starter in the home and perfect for late-night picnics.
